BUILD A LIGHTHOUSE I WAS RIDING MY BIKE IN THE RAIN… PAST THE CAMPS, PAST THE LONG LOST SOULS, WHO FELL THRU HOLES IN THEIR LIVES, HE WAS TALKING TO HIMSELF LIKE MAD AS I PASSED, HE WAS LOST AT SEA WHILE SHIPS LIKE ME, SAILED BY, SAILED BY, SAILED BY… chorus BUILD A LIGHTHOUSE FOR ALL THE SAILORS, WHO ARE LOST AT SEA, TELL THE HOPELESS THERE’S A HARBOUR, THERE’S A PLACE TO SLEEP - THERE’S A PLACE TO SLEEP. THERE’S A WOMAN THAT I SEE SOMETIMES, WHO’S GROWN WEAK, AND SHE’S NOT TO BLAME FOR HER BODY’S PAINFUL TOLL, AND SHE’S SINKING AS THEY BUILD AN ARK, THAT LEAKS, ALL THEIR PRAYERS AND PLANS, LIKE ROPES OF SAND WON’T HOLD, WON’T HOLD, WON’T HOLD… Chorus, then bridge: AND IF THE QUEER KIDS SWIM ALONE, CAN THEY MAKE IT ON THEIR OWN, (F chord) CAN THEY MAKE IT SAFELY HOME WE ARE SINKING IN A SEA OF HANDS REACHING OUT, WE CAN’T LIFT THEM ALL, AS THEIR STORMS & SQUALL RUN DEEP, AND I WORRY THAT I MIGHT DROWN, IN THEIR DESPAIR, CAN WE RISE ABOVE TO FIND THE LOVE THEY NEED, THEY NEED, THEY NEED…

All We Want 03:51
ALL WE WANT HE COMES AGAIN TO TALK, ABOUT THE GIRL THAT WALKED AWAY, HE BARES HIS OPEN SOUL, AND SHOWS ME ALL THE HOLES SHE MADE. AND ALL WE WANT IS SOMEONE NEAR, SOMEONE THERE TO CATCH OUR TEARS AND SAY, I KNOW IT… I KNOW IT… HURTS… IT HURTS… HE’S LOST IN HIS OWN HOUSE, HE HOPES I’LL STICK AROUND AWHILE, AND THOUGH I WANT TO LEAVE, I LISTEN TO HIM BLEED AND SMILE, AND ALL WE WANT IS SOMEONE THERE, SOMEONE’S HAND TO TOUCH OUR HAIR AND SAY, I KNOW IT… I KNOW IT… HURTS… IT HURTS… SOLO AND ALL WE WANT WHEN DARKNESS FALLS, IS SOMEONE CLOSE – SOMEONE TO CALL AND SAY, I KNOW IT… I KNOW IT… HURTS… IT HURTS…

THAT'S NO WAY TO BE WHEN I WAS LITTLE I PLAYED WITH THE BOYS, IN MY SHITKICKER COWBOY BOOTS, BUT MAMA THREW THEM AWAY ONE DAY, DRESSED ME UP ALL PINK AND CUTE, (AND DRESSED ME ALL PINK AND CUTE) AND IT BROKE MY HEART, THOSE BOOTS WERE PART OF ME, (AND) I REMEMBER MAMA MAMA MAMA SAYING, NOW (BABY) THAT'S NO WAY TO BE. PAPA LOVED ME WHEN I WON A RACE, BUT THAT ENDED WHEN I GOT CAUGHT, HE SENT ME OFF TO SAINT MARY'S (SCHOOL), WHERE THE GIRL I LOVED WAS NOT, AND IT BROKE MY HEART, THAT GIRL WAS PART OF ME, (AND) I REMEMBER PAPA PAPA PAPA SAYING, HONEY, THAT'S NO WAY TO BE. NO WAY TO BE… THAT'S NO WAY TO BE, NO WAY TO BE… THAT'S NO WAY TO BE, I LEFT ONE DAY AND DROVE AWAY, FROM MY PARENTS AND MY ROOTS, THEY'LL NEVER EVER ACCEPT THAT TALL QUEER GIRL, IN THE COWBOY BOOTS, (and) IT HURTS INSIDE (that) THEY CAN'T ABIDE WITH ME, OH, MAMA, MAMA, PAPA, PAPA, OH, THAT'S NO WAY TO BE, OH, MAMA, MAMA, PAPA, PAPA… THAT'S NO WAY TO BE.

Why I Can't Be Your Friend I'M STRETCHING OUT SLOWLY, THE PLANET BELOW ME, FEELS MORE LIKE HOME NOW, I’M FALLING TOGETHER AND THOUGH I SEEM BETTER, I'M STILL NOT… SOMEHOW, FOR YOU IT’S ALL OVER ~ FOR ME IT WON’T END, AND THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND OH NO, THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND. I’M BETTER AT LYING TO FRIENDS WHO ARE PRYING ABOUT MY WELFARE THEY ALL WANT THE DETAILS I KNOW THAT THEY MEAN WELL BUT I CAN’T GO THERE. YOUR CUTS ARE HEALING WHILE MINE NEVER MEND, AND THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND, THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND. LOVE YOU - HATE YOU - WANT YOU… GONE, GONE WITH THE MADNESS, THE SILENCE AND SADNESS, WHO WOULD I BE IF I SEE YOU AGAIN, AND THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND. I FINALLY OPENED SOME DOORS THAT WERE BROKEN THAT WE HAD SLAMMED SHUT. I FINALLY REPAINTED THE COLORS THAT FADED WHEN YOU LEFT HOME BUT HEARTS THAT ARE BROKEN AREN’T EASY TO MEND AND THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND, THAT'S WHY I CAN'T BE YOUR FRIEND.

Breakdown Lane You learn to drive, When the wheels come off, Find your way when the map gets tossed It’s the grace of surviving. When you crash and burn you come alive, At your lowest point your wings arrive, It’s a small silver lining. chorus And all the past is just broken glass, On the road in the rain, As you walk away from the wreck you pray, You’re not defined by your time, In the breakdown lane… in the breakdown lane. So you learn to rise from the ash and smoke. Among the damage you find hope Like some phoenix rising Your blood kicks in when your luck runs out, You lift up cars (and) have no doubt It’s your soul reprising. And we learn to swim, When we're thrown in deep, We hold our breath and kick our feet, As we’re decompressing. And we learn to rise, When we sink like stone, Find some fight left in our bones, It’s an ancient blessing.

FALLING LIKE THE RAIN It's clear we're here only a heartbeat, All things fall away someday, But if we're here all alone, Spinning 'round nothing more, Baby, won't you hold me while we're falling, Falling here together, Falling - falling like the rain. No wings no strings no god to save you, There's no nets below you now, But if it's true - nothing's there, Keeping us in the air, Maybe you could hold me while we're falling, Falling here together, Falling - falling like the rain. Love is all we really know, Hold me closely and don't let go. You know and i know, There's nowhere like heaven, Angels won't appear, oh no, So if we're just here and gone, Falling stars - no beyond, Baby, will you hold me while we're falling, Falling in our moment, Falling - falling like the rain.

A Better World The headlights hurt her eyes, A thousand cars fly by, But she won’t stop ‘til way past dawn, The life she knew for years, Shrinks in the rearview mirror, But she won’t turn back – she drives on and on and on… CHORUS Well, she took his lies and she took his rage, She took all she could then smashed that cage, He swears he’ll change, But it’s all too little too late, She’s not gonna wait… for a better world – a better world. The freeway homes fly by, She thinks of those inside, She wonders if they’re trapped like her, Like wild swans. Swans with broken wings, Swans with broken dreams, Looking up at skies that go on and on and on… REPEAT CHORUS The sun begins to rise… above the open skies, She finds herself recalling old songs, Songs of open roads, songs of letting go, Songs of taking flight that go on and on and on…

I CAN’T GET OVER YOU THAT BLACK CAT’S SITTING BY THE GARDEN GATE WONDERIN’ WHERE YOU’VE BEEN THE SUNFLOWERS DRIED UP AND HANG THEIR HEADS THEY’RE COMING APART IN THE WIND A FRIEND DROPPED BY TO SAY HELLO BUT I DID NOT LET HIM IN chorus: I CAN’T GET OVER YOU (3 X) WHEN THE SUN COMES UP THE MOON TURNS PALE THAT’S THE WAY IT WORKS SOME THINGS SHINE SOME THINGS FADE AND SOME THINGS JUST HURT I STIR MY CUP AND TIE MY BOOTS AND DRIVE MY MYSELF TO WORK. WELL I FEEL MYSELF GOING NUMB AT TIMES TO ALL THE TEARS IN THE WORLD NO REASON FOR BREATHING - NO REASON FOR RISING NO REASON to write-sing THESE WORDS SOME LETTERS CAME A WHILE AGO I’LL READ THEM SOMEDAY SOON

Is It Time To Say Goodnight Is it time to say goodnight? Just dim the lights, And waltz away without a sound, Is it time to strike the set? Say “No regrets, It’s just the way the world goes ‘round”. It’s been light and dark, Crazy mad from the start, But always… always love was at the heart. Is it time to let it go – admit we know that, Nothing starts ‘til something ends. If I walked away right now, No speech, no bow, Will we still smile and meet as friends. We’ve been blessed & scarred, We have soared and starved, But always… always love was at the heart. Is it time to say goodnight? Dim the lights and waltz away without a sound...

about

'A Better World' features 9 new acoustic-based originals by Marv & Rindy Ross (Quarterflash, 'Harden My Heart). These hope-provoking songs have their roots in both folk and pop with influences like Joni Mitchell, Sade, and Paul Simon. The lyrics detail stories of yearning, loss, healing, and resilience. The music is voiced by Marv's uniquely tuned guitars, co-producer Gregg Williams' empathetic percussion, and Rindy's disntinctively clear voice and lyrical sax lines. Along with some inspiring musical guest performances, bassists Sandin Wilson and Denny Bixby (Quarterflash) round out the instrumental pallette to give this album an 'acoustic band' quality that bridges the Rosses' love for both folk and pop.
